Cassette Seals
What are Cassette Seals?
Cassette seals have been specifically developed to have excellent sealing efficiency of the lubrication media whilst offering the maximum protection from external contamination. Cassette seals are therefore a common solution in wheel end applications in the Transportation industry for ‘Off Highway’ military vehicles. Designed to retain dense liquids such as oil or grease, cassette seals are also applicable to other areas of the vehicle driveline which also demand a simple, high performance seal solution.
All cassette seals are also designed with an integrated wear sleeve incorporating a rubber coated inside diameter. This eliminates the need for precision grinding or hardening of the shaft surface in order to create an ideal dynamic running surface. Additionally, no damage (grooving) to the shaft will occur so any subsequent rebuild or seal replacement will not require renovation or machining of the shaft surface. In this way, the performance of the new cassette seal will not have its performance impaired or compromised.
The inner elastomer surface of the cassette seal wear sleeve and dirt lips are commonly manufactured in a Nitrile (NBR) material. The main body of the seal including seal lip can be offered
in both Nitrile (NBR) and Fluoroelastomer (FKM) materials. Application parameters dictate which material combination should be used and other materials are available if required in order to suit specific application conditions.
Although cassette seals are simple in their construction, consideration of the assembly process needs to be taken into account. Depending on the design of the particular equipment of assembly in question, a different assembly process may be required. Your FTL engineer will be able to advise on the best process and any required tooling requirements.
