What is a Hydraulic Seal?
A hydraulic seal is a relatively soft, non-metallic ring, captured in a groove or fixed in a combination of rings, forming a seal assembly, to block or separate fluid in reciprocating motion applications. Hydraulic seals are vital in machinery. Their use is critical in providing a way for fluid power to be converted to linear motion.
Typically these are manufactured from NBR, FKM, PUR and filled PTFE materials and used in conjunction with standard mineral based hydraulic oils. Ensuring that a seal system retains 100% leak free is a primary goal when specifying the seal system. The tribological qualities of seals vary from one design to another and understating this is key to a reliable system. Seals themselves stay leak free by minimizing friction and wear. This is achieved by a complex combination of material performance and geometric design.
High pressure high temperature applications often present the harshest environment for hydraulic seals, although equipment operating in ultra-low ambient temperatures can also be equally challenging. With a combination of advanced material technology and innovative seal design, FTL makes both application extremes possible.
